Mooresville Eases Its Water Rules: Car Washing and Pressure Washing Are Back, but Lawn Watering Stays at Two Nights a Week

The Town of Mooresville lifted a few of its enhanced Stage 2 drought rules on Oct. 19. Here is what you can do again, what is still limited, and when you can run sprinklers.

Mooresville NC

Mooresville homeowners can wash the car in the driveway again. On Oct. 19, the Town of Mooresville eased part of its enhanced Stage 2 water conservation rules, effective immediately, while keeping the main limit on lawn irrigation in place. (Town of Mooresville)

What is allowed again

According to the town's announcement:

  • Washing vehicles at home.
  • Pressure washing, such as driveways, decks, and siding.
  • Bulk potable water sales from the town.

The town says reservoir storage, streamflow, and drought conditions have improved thanks to residents conserving and some extra rain, and that peak water season is over. It hopes to step down to a lesser drought stage in the coming months if that trend holds. (Town of Mooresville)

What is still restricted

Everything else in the enhanced Stage 2 rules stays in effect:

  • Irrigation is limited to two windows a week: Tuesday at 6 p.m. to Wednesday at 6 a.m., and Saturday at 6 p.m. to Sunday at 6 a.m. That covers in ground systems, hose end sprinklers, and automatic timers.
  • Decorative fountains and water features that do not support aquatic life are restricted.
  • Filling, draining, or refilling swimming pools is restricted. Limited top offs for maintenance and to protect a liner are allowed.

What you can always do

Hand watering, drip irrigation, and watering cans are permitted. So is irrigation for newly installed landscaping while it gets established, and watering from a private pond. Private wells, other alternate water sources, and uses needed for public health, firefighting, or critical infrastructure are exempt, among others listed by the town. (Town of Mooresville)

Why this matters this fall

Late October is prime time for overseeding fescue and planting shrubs and trees. Under these rules, newly installed landscaping can be watered while it gets established, and hand watering and drip lines are always fine, so a fall planting project is still workable. For everything else, set the sprinkler timer for the Tuesday and Saturday night windows. If you are not sure whether new seed counts as new landscaping, ask the town before running sprinklers on extra nights.

These rules apply to customers on Town of Mooresville water. If you live elsewhere in the Lake Norman area, your rules depend on your water provider, and they are not the same everywhere. Charlotte Water said on Oct. 15 that its mandatory Stage 2 restrictions, which still limit home car washing, remain in place for its customers. (Charlotte Water)

What is uncertain

The town has not given a date for moving to a lower drought stage. That depends on rainfall and reservoir levels over the coming months.

Where to check

The town posts current rules at mooresvillenc.gov/drought, and residents with questions can call 704-663-7282, according to the announcement. (Town of Mooresville)
