Wegmans in NC

Charlotte's long wait for Wegmans is almost over. The grocer's first Charlotte store opens at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 11550 North Community House Road in Ballantyne, according to Wegmans.

If you've only heard the hype from friends who moved here from the Northeast, here's what's actually opening, how to plan a visit, and who's still hiring.

The basics

  • When: Wednesday, Oct. 14. Doors open at 9 a.m.
  • Where: 11550 North Community House Road, Charlotte, NC, between Endhaven Lane and Ballantyne Commons Parkway (WCCB)
  • Size: About 110,000 square feet
  • Staff: Roughly 450 full time and part time employees

What's inside

Wegmans says the Ballantyne store will carry the departments its regulars know: a large produce section with hundreds of fruits and vegetables, plus seafood, meat, bakery, deli, and cheese counters. Prepared foods are a big part of the draw, including sushi, pizza, salads made by chefs, and sandwiches. The store will also sell a wide selection of wine and beer.

This location has a couple of features you won't find at other Wegmans stores, Channel 9 reported. One is "The Grill," where food is cooked to order in front of customers. The other is an outdoor play area for kids.

Planning to go on opening day

Expect company. Wegmans has been planning for a big crowd, and the store is coordinating with CMPD on traffic around Community House Road, Channel 9 reported, citing The Charlotte Observer. The same report said shoppers would be allowed to camp out in the parking lot before doors open, with portable restrooms on site.

Opening day plans can change, so check Wegmans for the latest before you head out. And if crowds aren't your thing, the store will still be there next week.

Still hiring

The store is still filling jobs ahead of opening. Wegmans lists full time roles throughout the store, including sushi, pizza, restaurant foods, deli, cheese, seafood, and bakery, plus part time positions such as cashiers.

Store Manager Patrick McGuinness said the team has "put a lot of care into hiring and training." Applicants can apply at jobs.wegmans.com/ballantyne or call 980-467-7333.

One perk worth knowing: through its employee scholarship program, Wegmans offers eligible part time employees up to $8,000 in tuition assistance over four years, and eligible full time employees up to $16,000, with no restriction on field of study.

Why it matters for Ballantyne

Wegmans and Northwood Investors, the developer behind the Ballantyne campus, announced the store in April 2024. Northwood described it as part of a broader effort to add more destination retail to the area.

Ballantyne sits just north of the South Carolina line, so the store is also a short drive for many residents of Fort Mill, Tega Cay, and Indian Land.

What's next

Ballantyne may not be the region's only Wegmans for long. The company has entered an agreement with Atrium Health to buy land at Westmoreland and Statesville roads in Cornelius and is evaluating it as a possible store site, Channel 9 reported. No second store has been announced, and we'll update this story if that changes.
